I never thought I could study again after a long gap and with kids. But the excellent program design, resources, halo from peers and academic staff and flexible, easy to understand study materials has enabled me to finish my masters. I learned many new skills, like programming (Python, R, Tableau), without having a single idea about it before in a very easy and effective way. The discussion forum was an interesting way for remote students to be attached to peers and exchange ideas. The program has added great value to my skills and profile, and opened the door to many opportunities I can choose from.

While not always mandatory, coding is a valuable skill for data analysts as it allows them to manipulate large datasets, automate tasks and perform advanced analyses. Common languages like Python, R, and SQL are often used in the field.

If you're looking to build your capability, UNSW’s Graduate Diploma in Analytics is a great program that provides foundational coding skills alongside analytical techniques. This combination prepares you for success in data-driven roles.

Yes, data analysts are in high demand across industries. As organisations increasingly rely on data to drive decision-making, skilled analysts are essential for interpreting data, identifying trends and providing actionable insights. This demand is expected to grow as businesses continue to prioritise data-driven strategies.

Most data analysts have a degree in analytics, data science, statistics, business, IT or a related field, along with practical skills in data tools and analytical methods.

Common qualifications include:

  • A bachelor’s degree in analytics, business, IT or mathematics
  • A postgraduate qualification for deeper expertise

Whatever path you choose, it is important to ensure you are developing skills in tools such as Excel, SQL, Python, R or data visualisation platforms. Knowledge of statistics, data modelling, problem-solving techniques and stakeholder management is highly recommended.

While some analysts enter the field through industry experience or short courses, formal study can improve job readiness and earning potential. A postgraduate analytics program helps build the advanced skills employers look for. If you're considering this path, UNSW is a leading choice, offering flexible, industry-relevant analytics programs to help you take the next step with confidence.

In a world awash with data, many organisations struggle to turn information into action. This is creating a growing demand for professionals who can bridge that gap. By combining analytical rigour, creativity, and real-world application, the Analytics programs are designed to help you learn how to transform data into clear, objective insights that can drive better, bolder business decisions.
