Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS) and HR analytics are both essential tools for modern HR management; HRIS streamlines the handling of employee data, while HR analytics transforms this information into meaningful business insights.

HRIS (Human Resource Information System) is designed to manage and organise employee data, while HR analytics focuses on analysing that data to drive strategic HR decisions. HR analysts use data to improve an organisation’s HR processes and workforce strategies.

They collect and interpret key metrics like employee performance, staff turnover rates and recruitment effectiveness. By identifying trends and providing data-driven insights, their work helps business leaders make more informed decisions to enhance hiring, retention, engagement and overall workforce management.

HR analytics covers a range of topics designed to help you leverage data for strategic HR decision-making. Key areas include workforce planning, employee performance analysis, talent acquisition metrics and predictive modelling for turnover and retention. You'll also explore data visualisation, HR technology systems and ethical considerations in handling employee data. UNSW’s Master of Human Resource Management and Human Resource Analytics is a great example, as it delves into these topics, equipping you with the skills to drive data-informed strategies and improve organisational outcomes.

An HR analyst uses data to help organisations make better decisions about their workforce, from hiring and performance to engagement and retention.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Analysing workforce data to identify trends in recruitment, turnover and performance.
  • Supporting workforce planning and forecasting future staffing needs.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of HR policies, learning programs and wellbeing initiatives.
  • Building dashboards and reports for HR and business leaders.
  • Recommending data-driven actions to improve culture, productivity and employee experience.

HR analysts work at the intersection of people and data, helping organisations create more effective and evidence-based people strategies. A postgraduate analytics program with a focus on HR or workforce analytics can help you develop these skills.

In a world awash with data, many organisations struggle to turn information into action. This is creating a growing demand for professionals who can bridge that gap. By combining analytical rigour, creativity, and real-world application, the Analytics programs are designed to help you learn how to transform data into clear, objective insights that can drive better, bolder business decisions.
